Real health is NOT the same as “fit” or “lean”

I was in emergency on a regular basis during my late teens and early 20s. I was referred from specialist to specialist with severe abdominal pain. I had no idea that:

  • My lack of knowledge and tools for dealing with stress was breaking down my body

  • Just because I was athletic and “fit” it didn’t mean I was healthy

  • The so-called “healthy” foods I was eating were not supporting my body. They were doing quite the opposite.

I eventually was told I had interstitial cystitis, and it was a light bulb moment for me when a specialist said to avoid certain foods that made the pain I was experiencing worse. I discovered that food does much more than just contribute to our body weight.

After following a restrictive diet, the interstitial cystitis improved, but I started to experience skin issues, fatigue, and hormone imbalances. My diet had solved one problem but created new ones.

In an effort to take ownership of my health, I learned about the nutrients our bodies need to function optimally. Was I getting enough potassium? B9? K2? Was stress causing me to burn through more magnesium, increasing my needs? I realized many diets focus on elimination, rather than optimal amounts of vitamins and minerals.

I switched my focus to nourishing my body with micronutrients and healthy lifestyle practices, and this shift drastically improved my skin, hormones, and energy. It also helped me become more in tune with my body.

I wanted to keep learning more, and became so fascinated with nutrition and lifestyle habits that I ended up changing my career path in physiotherapy to pursue nutrition and health coaching education. The journey completely changed my relationship with my body, mind, and spirit. Now I help others do the same! My unique approach combines micronutrient nutrition, hormone-synced fitness, and self-care practices for total health optimization.
